AI Democratization for All
As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes a part of our daily lives, it is important to make sure that everyone has equal access to AI. Today, only large technology companies and a few well-funded research groups have access to the most advanced computers, AI tools and systems. This limits the types of research that can be done in Norway, who can access the AI tools, who has access to developing new solutions and, not least, where data that is input to the learning processes can be stored.
When few people have control over these resources, it can cause unequal distribution of use, benefits and research. It also entails a potential long-term risk for society by creating inequalities in the ability to innovate and limiting the diversity of perspectives in AI development.
In light of these obstacles, we propose to establish AI Democratization for All (AIDeA), a pioneering AI center that will promote equitable access to AI tools and contribute to the sustainable development of Norwegian society.
Purpose
AIDeA aims to ensure the robustness of AI systems by encouraging an environment of autonomy and broad involvement, and by embracing the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) principles. By democratizing AI development, we aim not only to distribute the benefits of the technology, but also to improve the quality and robustness of the AI systems themselves and increase knowledge about the practical use of such systems.
The democratization of AI encompasses the democratization of AI development, AI use, AI profits and AI governance.
Project goal
AIDeA uses education as the primary method of capacity building, and the overall approach to achieving our democratization goals is through:
- developing a federated infrastructure based on open standards to facilitate access to AI technology for all (technology development) and use.
- promoting the use of ethical, privacy-friendly and innovative AI applications by encouraging wider participation and sustainable business models (innovation), and
- explore the societal impact of this broader participation by implementing and evaluating innovative solutions in practice (societal impact).
Required partners and expertise
In order to create the centre, we need partners and expertise that can be part of the development. We are looking for partners from:
- Research and academic institutions, data/performance measurement centers.
- Healthcare providers, health data networks, municipalities
- Technology companies and enterprises (large corporations, SMEs, start-ups, etc.)
- Data science, interoperability and standardization, security and privacy, AI ethics and law, governance, social sciences and humanities, policy makers and other stakeholders.
- International AI partners (Nordic, EU, international)
