Webinar: Adverse events when prescribing medicines in hospitals

How does the introduction of electronic charts affect the prescribing of medicines? Which errors disappear and which new ones arise? This was the topic of the webinar on June 13.

Webinar on adverse events when prescribing medicines
Thomas J. Riiser and Alma Mulac present findings on changes in adverse events before and after the introduction of electronic charts.

The introduction of electronic patient charts in hospitals has aimed to strengthen patient safety and improve the quality of drug treatment. In this presentation, the results of a project that has investigated the effect of this in more detail were presented.

The project has looked at drug-related incidents when prescribing medicines in 2016 and 2022, before and after the introduction of the electronic charts. By developing a method to categorize these events, the researchers have analyzed the errors both quantitatively and qualitatively.

The findings show that some errors have disappeared after digitization, but new types of errors, such as typing errors or the wrong drug selected in the electronic chart, have arisen.

Presentation by Alma Mulac, Special Advisor, Pharmacist, PhD, Oslo University Hospital and Thomas J. Riiser, Special Advisor, Oslo University Hospital.
