Nordic–Alaskan collaboration on AI, eHealth and Indigenous perspectives

The project, Nordic–Alaskan collaboration on artificial intelligence, e-health and Indigenous perspectives in the Arctic regions, is led by the Norwegian Centre for E-health Research at the University Hospital of North Norway in collaboration with University of Oulu and Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.

The aim is to strengthen knowledge and collaboration on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare in Arctic regions, with particular emphasis on Indigenous perspectives and the ethical development of digital health services.

The project runs in 2026 and includes a scoping review, meetings with international partners in Norway, Finland and Alaska, and participation in Arctic Encounter in Alaska. The results will be synthesised into a publication and a policy brief, contributing to the knowledge base for further development of AI in northern regions.

Goals

To strengthen knowledge, collaboration and competence on AI in healthcare in Arctic and Indigenous contexts, and to establish an international partnership between Norway, Finland and Alaska as a basis for more inclusive and sustainable digital health services. 

Method

The project combines a scoping review, meetings with international partners, and participation in Arctic Encounter. The work includes systematic knowledge synthesis and professional dialogue between researchers and clinicians in Norway, Finland and Alaska, as well as the development of policy recommendations.

Conclusion

The project will generate new knowledge on AI and Indigenous perspectives in healthcare and strengthen collaboration across Arctic regions. The results will support better decision-making and more inclusive digital development in the North, and provide a foundation for future international projects.
