"We are all billionaires in genome data"

Ernst Hafen firmly believes that "we are all billionaires in genome data". Hear what he and others have to say about the citizen as an active participant in how their health data is used and managed. Recordings from EHTEL's 2021 Thought Leaders Symposium are now available.

Every time you visit the doctor, use a wearable, or if you map your genes, you produce data about your health. Regulations exist to manage all this health data and make it available in proper forms for you as a citizen, researchers, and innovators. EHTEL's key message at their 2021 Thought Leader Symposium was that you as a citizen should be an active participant in how your health data is used and managed. It is your data, after all.

"Our researchers need access to health data in order to create new knowledge. The benefit for you as a citizen is that you learn more about your own health. I'm glad to see that this was the predominate theme at the 2021 symposium," says Siri Bjørvig from the Norwegian Centre for E-health Research, and previously a member of EHTEL's board.

All recordings from EHTEL's 2021 Thought Leaders Symposium about "Imagining a citizen-centric health data ecosystem" are available on their website.

EHTEL (the European Health Telematics Association) is dedicated to the improvement of healthcare delivery through digital health. In addition to an annual symposium, they offer webinars, support EU-funded projects, and actively participate in working groups and task forces.

The Norwegian Centre for E-health Research is a member of EHTEL's board and was a partner in producing the 2021 symposium.
