A new way of running an outpatient clinic

In Kristiansand you will find a user-managed outpatient clinic. People with HIV often need extra confidentiality, coping and experience sharing. This has been taken seriously by the hospital.

How do people with human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) want to be care for by the hospital?
It is important to involve the users, to bring about co-creation between patients and professionals. What is the need? Which offers should be there?

The new HIV medicines have made life easier for many living with their disease. There is now far less need for patients to travel to the hospital. What wishes did the patients have for follow-up from the medical outpatient clinic?

Based on the feedback Sørlandet Hospital Kristiansand received in 2012, they have become a user-driven outpatient clinic and changed the methods for follow-up. Digital follow-up has come into place in the form of a preparation form, dialogue messages and video consultation between patient and healthcare personnel, as well as a peer-to-peer network where patients can meet others in the same situation on video. Both people with HIV, healthcare personnel, mercantile and ICT personnel were involved in the development of the solution. The intention was to co-create a solution that could also be passed on to other patient groups.

The University of Agder has carried out research related to the introduction of digital follow-up for people with HIV. They have investigated how the patients experienced the use of the piloted digital solution and what expectations and needs they had for digital follow-up from the medical outpatient clinic. They also organized a co-creation workshop where the purpose was to reach an agreement between all parties involved in the digital patient process on how to offer the best possible digital follow-up.
