Many people say they don't care about the last three months of their lives. In Germany there is a slogan: Rather die than go to a nursing home.

Patient pathways for the elderly are often complicated because they consist of several diseases at the same time and have unclear boundaries. A patient pathway can and should include more than what takes place at the hospital or GP.

Professor Bettina Husebø at the University of Bergen puts patient pathways for the elderly in a broader societal perspective by asking the question ‘How do I want to live in the future?’

The Norwegian Directorate of Health recommends digital home monitoring where appropriate. Digital home care is more than just technological gadgets. We need warm hands, customised living situations and a social network, to name but a few.

Based on the older generation, both now and in the future, Husebø expands the concept of patient pathways to cover the whole of society.
