Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) are applications that use information and data from various sources to assist health professionals in taking clinical decisions. Decision support tools are typically designed to integrate a medical knowledge base and patient-specific information with a rules engine, to generate case-specific recommendations and advice to clinicians. Decision support systems have previously been used extensively in other sectors, and the clinical decision support system has its origins here there.

The assignment overriding aim is to describe the characteristics of the different architectural approaches, standards and development directions for decision support in the industry in general and among the leading suppliers in particular. The descriptions should include an assessment of the key strengths and weaknesses of the different approaches seen in the context of the adopted development direction in the Whitepaper "One citizen - one journal".

Goals

• Describe leading architecture approaches and development directions for decision support, including the prevalence and experiences.
• Describe different standards that are appropriate for representation of decision rules, including prevalence and prior experiences.
• Describe possibilities for integration of decision rules.
• Describe possibilities for customization of content in public decision-making rules to local conditions without principles of the underlying health professional knowledge waived.
