Pharmacist in the emergency department

How can a patient's medication use be correct from the start of their hospital stay?

Pharmacist in the emergency department
Renate Elenjord focuses on the correct use of medicines in hospitals.

Many patients are hospitalised due to drug-related problems, and many drug-related errors occur in hospitals. Sykehusapotek Nord wants to identify and prevent this in collaboration with Nordland Hospital, UNN and UiT The Arctic University of Norway.

The Northern Norway Regional Health Authority (Helse Nord) is funding the research project ‘Pharmacists in emergency departments’ with NOK 20 million to study the effects of having pharmacists as part of the interdisciplinary team in emergency departments. This can save lives and shorten hospital stays.

Renate Elenjord is Head of Research at Sykehusapotek Nord and Associate Professor at UiT, The Arctic University of Norway. She is a pharmacist with a doctorate in pharmacology and is currently leading a major research project funded by Helse Nord: ‘Pharmacists in emergency departments’, in which pharmacists will be integrated as part of the interdisciplinary team at the emergency departments in Tromsø, Bodø and Harstad. The need for good digital solutions when a new occupational group is to be integrated into the clinical collaboration became apparent early in the project period. The project started in January 2019 and will run for six years. So far, two PhD fellows and one postdoc have been linked to the project, as well as a number of master's students each year.
