Patient safety is never wrong

Medicines are an important part of patient care at a hospital, but they are also the most common factor in patient injuries and adverse events. How does the Western Norway Regional Health Authority work to reduce the risks associated with pharmaceutical treatment?

Webinar: Patient safety is never wrong
Tonje Folkvang talks about Helse Vest's work to reduce the risk of drug-related injuries.
The goal is a feasible gold standard. We say ‘feasible’ because we recognise that we need to look at the different patient groups differently.

20 per cent of non-conformity reports in the Western Norway Regional Health Authority are related to medicines, and 20 per cent of patient injuries are related to drug treatment.

In recent years, the Western Norway Regional Health Authority has worked intensively to reduce the risks associated with drug treatment. The work and experiences can be relevant to healthcare professionals outside the Western Norway Regional Health Authority, for example a learning game for drug calculation that will be launched during the summer.

Presentation by Tonje Folkvang, pharmacist and project manager for ROMLE at Western Norway Regional Health Authority.

In 2020, pharmaceuticals were highlighted as one of five risk areas that Western Norway Regional Health Authority wants to pay particular attention to in the future. An initiative was established under the name ‘Pharmaceutical risk area’, which includes all health authorities in the region and Western Norway Regional Health Authority ICT.

Through this initiative, a Regional Pharmaceutical Risk Area Plan (ROMLE) has been developed. The plan contains 10 measures divided into 4 action areas: Expertise, work processes, ICT support and governance/management. The work to implement the measures started in August 2022 and is now coming to an end.
