A nursing home's experiences with digital tools for medication management

The nursing home in Bindal municipality has a medicine cabinet and several trolleys. Here they share some thoughts on time saving, quality and safety.

Webinar: Medication trolleys and cabinets
Julia Sanders and May Kristin Trøan reflect on the impact of pharmaceutical cabinets and trolleys on their working lives and patient safety.
Adding new patients to the medication trolley is easy. Drawers can be moved on the trolley, without removing contents, as each drawer is linked to a patient. Most of the problems we've had were user errors. For example, lack of training in how to handle the system when the internet goes down.

Quality and safety in medication management from start to finish - that's the goal. The nursing home in Bindal municipality has acquired several tools to help in this process. The first is a medicine cabinet in the medicine room, to help with the preparation of medicines. The second is several medicine trolleys. These are wheeled around to residents and ensure that the right person gets the right medicine.

How do these aids affect nurses? And not least the patients - have there been fewer medication errors?

Presentation by Julia Sanders and May Kristin Trøan, nurses in Bindal municipality.

Between them, Julia and May Kristin have 36 years of experience as nurses in Bindal municipality. Both have been super-users of digital medicine trolleys and closed medicine loops since 2021.
